PE Curriculum
Our balance of individual, team, co-operative, competitive and creative activities cater for individual pupils’ needs and abilities. The PE scheme of work progressively builds key knowledge, skills and techniques which, combined with varied and flexible teaching styles, provides stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning opportunities for pupils.
All children receive two hours of physical education a week. These lessons are delivered either by class teachers or specialist PE coaches, who have expert subject knowledge and are extensively trained in the areas of the curriculum they teach.
The areas covered in the PE curriculum for EYFS and Key Stage 1 focus on the development of fundamental movements. In their outdoor lessons the children improve their physical literacy through a wide range of multi-skills.
These skills are then developed in more specific games and sports throughout Key Stage 2. The children also take part in indoor lessons, which consist of dance and gymnastics units. Here the children have the chance to revisit and build on the knowledge, skills and techniques acquired in the previous key stage. Pupils develop their creative skills, whilst continually improving their balance, strength, coordination and agility.
Residential Trips
We value the educational impact of residential trips and organise trips in Year 4, 5 and 6. Residential trips are an amazing opportunity for the pupils to participate in new physical experiences, creating a great sense of teamwork and determination, which children are able to bring back to school and continue to develop. We offer a wide range of outdoor and adventurous activities, which take our pupils beyond their comfort zone, challenging them in fun and exciting ways. Activities include abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing, hiking, archery and many more!
Our residentials support pupils in progressively acquiring knowledge and techniques across human-made structures before venturing out into the Derbyshire countryside to finally apply their learning in the natural world in Year 6.
Our upcoming residential trips are:
Year 4 - PGL Caythorpe Court, Lincolnshire
This is a 3 day, 2 night trip and provides an exciting introduction to our residential programme, with the aim of increasing self-esteem, independence and teamwork.
Year 6 - Dukes Barn, Derbyshire
This 5 day, 4 night trip builds on the previous 2 years. Pupils apply their well-established outdoor and adventurous skills to explore the natural world and beautiful Derbyshire countryside. The children take part in scrambling, gorge walking, abseiling and canoeing, putting their learning to the ultimate test!

Award Winning Success
Modeshift Stars Active Travel Awards 2019 - East Midlands Champions / National Finalists
We were incredibly proud to achieve the Modeshift Gold Award for our 3-year project to improve active travel within the school and community. This was a project led by our pupils through our Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) programme. Our JRSOs led daily patrols at the school gate to ensure a safe start and end to each day for our pupils and parents. Each year we hold our 'Walk to School' initiative which is very well supported and reduces the number of cars at the school gate. Due to this tremendous success, 3 of our JRSOs were invited to Portcullis House, Parliament to give a presentation at the Modeshift National Awards in front of watching MPs.
